The Big Decision: Casting Off

After having a pseudo-plan in the works to sail to the Caribbean since about October of 2014, lately it seems we get the question all the time: “how did ya’ll decide to do this?” “What are ya’ll doing?”” When did this come up?”Wow. Loaded question so alas I begin a blog post about this. We first found our love for doing business on the water in the Summer of 2014. We opened Orange Beach Adventures in Orange Beach, AL, and stayed book every weekend in addition to our 9-5 making people happy while they are on vacation. This included sunset cruises, birthday parties, paddle board trips, diving, among others. We love working with people by making them happy.

We had a great summer, worked our butt off then decided to take a trip to some small island not many people have heard of: Culebra. I read about this little island in Outside Magazine and then was watching Travel Channel the next day and Culebra popped up again: one of the 50 prettiest beaches in the world. Tickets booked, small house booked, and we are headed to this place. Fell in love. The people are nice, it is beautiful, and not to mention the food is the best. We want to go back to the Caribbean and keep exploring or go live in this place. We met another couple Aly and John who sold everything and moved to Vieques. They hadn’t regretted one minute of doing that. So we went home in October of 2014 and thought we may do this in 5 years or so.

We get back to Bama and then I meet this amazing yoga instructor named Nicole Graham. It just so happened that she had been to Culebra and also loved it. And she and her husband Steve live on a sailboat. The world keeps getting smaller. We become friends with these awesome people and they really were part of our inspiration for living aboard. Fade in and fade out, in 2015 Randy continues with his dive certifications by completing his master diver training and now dive master. I decided to go to yoga teacher training and learned how important non-attachment is. So we had 2 garage sales, loads and loads to Goodwill, put the house up for sale in June, house sold in October (to the date we were in Culebra one year ago), and every piece of furniture sold. By December 2015, we are full time liveaboards. This is happening. We rent a car and drive to St. Pete then sail back in one piece.

We both have been in the corporate rat race for years, and spend all our time planning vacations and thinking about the weekends, so we finally decided, why not-let’s just live our lives now, not in retirement years, which may never come. Fairhope, AL, will always be here and our hearts and family our here and we will be back. But the world is big and you gotta trust the universe. Signs keep pointing to go sailing. I”m not going to say YOLO since that is so 2011, but really, tomorrow is not a guarantee so we are ready to do this. We have saved and planned and are trusting the universe. Our love for adventure and travel is going to be our focus. We are living on the boat and hope to make a living while we are going to be headed South. We hope you guys will either come visit or get inspired and get on board one day too!
